Self proclaimed as one of the world's northernmost wok restaurants, Shanghai Wok is a family run Chinese restaurant located on Elvegata 1, 9008 Tromso. It focusses on wok dishes originating for East China. It's one of the first eating spot you notice as you get into Tromso City. It seemed popular with locals around the area, we saw at least 3-4 families walking in and out with take away orders.
We decided to venture into it's wok's culinary delights one dreary day end of March during our winter sojourn north. Obviously the restaurant being non-halal, our choices of dishes are fairly limited. Typically we'll get seafood dishes and maybe vegan fair if they are available. Noticeably lacking on the menu are fish and shellfish dishes. The rest that are available to us were a vegan (mixed vege stir fry) and scampi.
We ordered the following:
1. Deep fried scampi with sweet and sour sauce as appetiser
2. Scampi ala Shanghai
3. Gong Bao Scampi
4. Chao Sho with Si Chuan sauce
and in keeping with the Norwegian norm, we ordered cold water to wash it all down. The Gong Bao and Chao Sho look like familiar dishes we've had before with lots of vegetables with slighty hot and spicy sauce.
The nice part is the food doesn't taste as ajinomoto flavoured as most typical Chinese fare do at times. Our dishes tasted just right with not too much salt and without the overly done artificial flavour. The scampi tasted pert and fresh, the vegetables crunchy as it should be and not overcooked. All dishes were served with proper white-rice in a porcelain bowl.
When we left the restaurant, though we were poorer by NOK850 (+tips), we felt satisfied with what was served to us. The restaurant is small, probably about eight tables but it felt warm and cosy with friendly staff.
We just wished they'd add fish or other seafood to their listing, Tromso after all is surrounded by water, surely there's plenty of fish and shellfish (ie. scallops, crabs etc) around. That would make a visit to Shanghai Wok that more enticing.
